Enfield: An Explorer Guide

The London Borough of Enfield

This week we explored the London Borough of Enfield. Located in North London, it borders the London boroughs of Barnet to the west, Haringey to the south, and Waltham Forest to the southeast. Formerly known as a busy market town dating back to the start of the 1300s, it is now a mix of countryside, parks, markets and shopping centers. In 2007, the town centre completed a major redevelopment project, adding many new high street shops. Here are some of the top spots:

Capel Manor Gardens

A hidden gem in Enfield, capel manor gardens boats 30 acres of gardens with a Georgian house at its heart. With an Italianate maze featuring a viewing platform, koi pond, Japanese rock garden and le Jardin de Vincent (inspired by Van Gogh) this endless series of gardens makes for an intriguing visit. If you’re a fan of princess Diana, you’ll also find the Princess of Wales Heritage Memorial Rose garden at Capel Manor, which has been decorated to mark the twentieth anniversary of her death. And if that wasn’t enough to tempt you, you can book a 30 minute alcapa walking experience. Full price tickets are only £7 (extra for the furry alcapas) so skip the usual park walk and opt to go here instead. A full list of their gardens can be found here.

Starfish and Coffee

If you’re looking for a place with beetroot lattes and something with a twist for lunch, look no further. Starfish and coffee is a lovely spot for brunch, cocktails, as well catering for halal meat and vegan dietary requirements. We tried the black bean fritters with avocado and crepe chicken (who knew maple syrup and chicken could work?!). The perfect place to stop by with friends or solo, we wouldn’t leave Enfield without giving this a shot.

The Plug

Something which you might expect to find in Shoreditch, the plug sells a range of vapourising merchandise, including t-shirts and seeds. They also host a variety of CBD goods, a compound that has recently grown in its status in the UK as one with extensive medicinal benefits. For those looking to reap them, you’ll find a whole host of products, from CBD bath salts, oral tinctures, and even bath bombs.

Chunk of Green Café

A Turkish family-owned café, this spot has an extensive menu for breakfast and lunch. You’ll find classics like Avacado on toast with poached eggs, as well as wraps, fresh juices and burgers. With vegan, halal and gluten free options available, this café combines English staples with Turkish cuisine – with kofte wraps, falafel, and Turkish bread. Looking for a generous helping of avocados or some grilled halloumi and vegetables? This place is perfect to satisfy all your midday cravings.

Broomfield Park

A typically British park in style, this park is home to lots of green space, and makes for a nice walk on the way into town (and the host of cool coffee spots). You can also see our team from the outstretched fields (hello canary wharf)! and a silhouette of the rest of the city. While a patch of blue comes up on google maps, unfortunately on our visit, the lake was no longer there! We recommend finding another spot if you’re looking to sit by the water.

Cos Jewellers

Located on 27 High Street, Southgate and what was formerly a pub in the 1850s, this specialist jewellers has been around for a very long time! It’s owned by Cos Stavrou, with over 40 years of experience, whom you can see pictured above in 1979. A visit to the shop and you’ll find a range of jewellery, whether you’re looking for an everyday piece to wear or wish to order something special for a christening or birthday.

Love brownies

Who doesn’t love brownies? Walking around Southgate station it’s surprising to find a brownie shop right around the corner. With locations across London, this particular shop is a floral abyss, with cosy sofas and pillows. It’s a great place to grab a cup of coffee and brownies to hit that sweet spot. With a range of different options – from salted caramel, Morello cherry, and raspberry, you’ll find a flavour to suit everyone. Note that the vegan brownies are harder than a traditional brownie, so opt for the non-vegan ones if a soft sponge is what you’re after!
